Community, Service, & Legacy

WHO

Blue Triangle Multi-Cultural Association, Inc. (BTMCA) is a Texas Non-Profit Corporation established in 1998, with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.

WHAT & WHERE

BTMCA owns and operates The Blue Triangle Community Center located at 3005 McGowen St., Houston, Texas in Third Ward.  Prior to transferring the property to BTMCA, Houston YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) built the center, a/k/a The Blue Triangle Branch of the YWCA, which served as a recreational, cultural, and social nucleus of the underserved community.

Today, the center is 21,474 square feet and consists of a gymnasium, commercial kitchen, natatorium, meeting spaces, classrooms, offices, and storage areas. In the aftermath of significant damage sustained during Hurricane Harvey, the Blue Triangle Community Center underwent a major interior renovation which was completed in March 2023.

WHY

To maintain the historic significance of the center, BTMCA acquired the property and initiated programs to continue the legacy of the center in serving the Houston community.

BTMCA has maintained affiliations with the Blue Triangle Garden Club and Blue Triangle Quilting Guild, both of which have a longstanding connection with the former Blue Triangle Branch of the YWCA. Additionally, BTMCA continues to host the Annual Breakfast with Santa which was started at the center more than 50 years ago and the learn to swim programs which were initiated with the addition of a swimming pool to the center in the 1980s.

New programs and activities are established based on the interests and need of the community. Some of the more recent initiatives include: The establishment of an Arts, Culture and Education program to support local artists and raise awareness about Dr. John T. Biggers and the mural housed at the Blue Triangle, Financial Literacy Workshops, Health Insurance and state benefit presentations and enrollment assistance, health clinics for the uninsured, health fair for Seniors, and celebrations of Juneteenth, Earth Day and National Senior Citizens Day.

Blue Triangle MCA operates The Blue Triangle Community Center providing a safe environment for the community to meet, learn and recreate in Houston's Third Ward. The African American women who run the organization were members of the former YWCA-Blue Triangle Branch that owned the center. We are committed to ensuring the perpetuity of the Blue Triangle's legacy. Consequently, in response to the evolving needs and interests of the community, we provide programs that attract a diverse population, celebrate and honor differences, while uniting the community on the common interest of improving the quality of life for all citizens.
