About

Blue Triangle MCA is a Texas nonprofit corporation established in 1998, with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. It unites connective interests toward improving the quality of life for all citizens in the City of Houston and surrounding communities by providing a safe environment for all to meet, learn and recreate at the Blue Triangle Community Center. Programs offered at the center include learn to swim, quilting, personal development classes (fitness, sports, and dance), educational advancement training (tutoring, technology, and other how-to classes), and cultural history activities (Juneteenth and Kwanzaa). The Blue Triangle is in Houston’s historic Third Ward near Texas Southern University, a historically black college and university. As home to the first branch of the Young Women’s Christian Association, the site is designated as a Texas historic landmark.

Meet - Learn - Recreate

To maintain the historic significance of the center, Blue Triangle MCA acquired and operates the Blue Triangle Community Center located at 3005 McGowen St., Houston, Texas in Third Ward to continue the legacy of the center in serving the Houston community. Prior to transferring the property to Blue Triangle MCA, Houston Young Women’s Christian Association built the center, a/k/a the Blue Triangle Branch of the YWCA, which served as a recreational, cultural, and social nucleus of the underserved community.

Today, the center is 21,474 square feet and consists of a gymnasium, commercial kitchen, natatorium, meeting spaces, classrooms, offices, and storage areas. In the aftermath of significant damage sustained during Hurricane Harvey, the Blue Triangle Community Center underwent a major interior renovation which was completed in March 2023.

Blue Triangle MCA has maintained affiliations with the Blue Triangle Garden Club and Blue Triangle Quilting Guild, both of which have a longstanding connection with the former Blue Triangle Branch of the YWCA. Additionally, Blue Triangle MCA continues to host the Annual Breakfast with Santa which was started at the center more than 50 years ago and the learn to swim programs which were initiated with the addition of a swimming pool to the center in the 1980s.

New programs and activities are established based on the interests and needs of the community. Some of the more recent initiatives include: The establishment of an Arts, Culture and Education program to support local artists and raise awareness about Dr. John T. Biggers and his mural housed at the Blue Triangle; educational programs to include Financial Literacy Workshops, Health Insurance and State Benefit presentations, insurance enrollment assistance, health clinics for the uninsured, health fair for seniors; and celebrating significant holidays and occasions to include Juneteenth, Earth Day, and National Senior Citizens Day.
